Title: Zaire "8" shapes, Nigerian Iron Money
Description: In Zaire, native copper was beaten into figure 8 shapes which are believed to be for currency use. This lot contains 8 examples of various sizes (the smallest appears to be brass, thus recycled material). See Opitz, p. 144. Also included: a Nigerian dubil, an iron bar with spread ends, about 15" long. They were used as money; in the 16th century, 13 would buy a male slave and 10 a female slave. See Opitz, pp. 136-36.
