Ye Colony of Rhoad Island and Providence Plantations in New England. Newport. August 16, 1710. Two Shillings Indented Bill, Raised to Twenty Shillings. Fr. RI-1. PCGS Very Good-10 Details. Severed and Reattached, Minor Design Redrawn, Double Backed. As illustrated.

Description: Quaint “Rhoad” Island spelling. Apparently laid paper. Serial No. 178. Signed by Nathaniel Sheffield, Job Greene, and John Coggeshall. Printer uncertain. Uniface, backed as when first offered in Ford. 105mm by 130mm. The present writer has been treated time and time again to great colonial notes while penning these words. Holding and describing this note takes the pleasure of writing to a new level. History in the hand never ceases to amaze some people, the writer included, and this is certainly an amazing note! The Newman Plate Note, still appearing virtually as it did in the Ford sale. The “S 2” denomination of the original note has been “raised” to “S 20,” but there was no space to alter the written denomination, “Two,” in the text. The PCGS qualifiers simply state what was visible in the Ford photos. “This is truly one of the most important notes in the Ford-Boyd Colonial note holding,” wrote that cataloger. The beneficiary of enthusiastic bidding in the Ford sale, this “Rhoad” Island rarity realized well into five-figures. We have every reason to believe it will do the same during this once-in-a-generation opportunity. The present note would be a singular focal point in any colonial paper money cabinet, and the star of the show in an advanced Rhode Island paper collection.
