“We jointly and severally promise to pay Isaac Winslow.” The Silver or Specie Bank. August 1, 1740. Seven Shillings & Six Pence. Fr. MA-87.3. PCGS Very Good-10 Details. Pieces Added, Multiple Repairs, Design Redrawn. As illustrated.

Description: Apparently laid paper. Serial No. 5455. 88mm by 110mm. Signed by Joshua Winslow, Edm. Quincy, H. Hall, and Sam. Sewall. Uniface. Back with mathematical scribblings. A pleasing note on the Silver or Specie Bank. The Ford cataloger called this note “a very important private bank note,” noting it was the first example of the issue offered by Stack’s since the sale of the Roper Collection in 1984. Though reconstruction and other enhancements have occurred with this note, it is far better off in its new state, barely detectable repairs and all. A classic rarity within the early American paper realm. Destined for but one cabinet.

Pedigree: Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate; Stack’s sale of the John J. Ford Collection, Part III, May 2004, Lot 520. (Ford Price Realized: $4,025)
