Virginia. October 5, 1778. Treasury of Virginia. Act of Assembly. Five Spanish Milled Dollars. Fr. VA-158. PCGS Very Fine-30 Details. Multiple Repairs. As illustrated.

Description: Laid paper. Serial No. 34320. Plate letters “la.” Signed by L. Wood and J. Wray. Printer uncertain. Uniface. 95mm by 65mm. An appealing note with a broad margin to left, slimmer margins on the other edges. Nicely inked, if somewhat faded, with serial number and signatures strong. Probably a rich-man’s note, so to speak; a Five Dollar note backed by Spanish Milled Dollars had an awful lot of buying power in the era. Indeed, it could very well have represented a week or two’s wages – if not more -- for a working man. Deserving of the grade, and equally deserving of its appearance as a single lot.

Pedigree: Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate; Stack’s sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XVII, March, 2007, Part of Lot 4447.
