Virginia. May 3, 1779. Treasury of Virginia. Act of Assembly. Fifty Spanish Milled Dollars or Fifteen Pounds. Fr. VA-169. PCGS Very Fine-30 Details. Small Pieces Replaced. As illustrated.

Description: Laid paper. Serial No. 11492. Signed by James Cocke, H. Cocke, and A. Craig. Printer uncertain. Uniface. 145mm by 95mm. An impressive bill, figuratively and literally. Its large size is stunning after the run of “average-sized” notes on the Virginia Acts. The quality is outstanding in-hand, with strong printing only lightly faded in places. Signatures and serial number not as robust as the surrounding impressions. This large denomination note made sense in commerce; not many people would take to carrying 50 Spanish Milled dollars around all day. This note was a part of a group lot in the Ford holdings. Choice to our eyes.

Pedigree: Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate; Stack’s sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XV, October, 2006, Part of Lot 8800. (Ford Price Realized for the lot: $1,610)
