Title: Very Rare Sosorofa String, Trobriand Islands
Description: In the Trobriand Islands, centrally-pierced conus tips were strung alternately with banana seeds to make attractive strings of alternating black and white; they are very old and no longer used as money, but in years past three or four strings would purchase a wife in "Bauwane" (Tauwema?) Village, Kaile'una Island. Extremely rare—in 1995, there were only three strings remaining on the island. According to Opitz, p. 312, these strings were called sosorofa.
