Header: Exceptional 1787 Vermont Copper
A Boldly Struck Britannia
Description: The deep golden-tan surfaces of this famous Vermont copper variety are essentially mark-free other than some planchet flaws that were present when struck. We note a shallow rim clip on the reverse at 3 o’clock that doesn’t affect the obverse rim. Now for the good part. From an early use of the reverse die in this combination, this specimen exhibits a full seated Britannia with strong head, branch, drapery, shield, and some dentils. The date is not visible and only portions of BRITANNIA are strong, yet this piece stands out well from the typical weak and unsightly RR-13. Lastly, the present coin is among the half dozen finest grading events for the variety listed at NGC. A nice opportunity for a Vermont coppers aficionado.
NGC Census: 4; 2 finer (both MS-63).
