Title: Valuable Pomo Magnesite Beads
Description: Though the Pomo Tribe of central California was the major supplier of clamshell beads for use as money, they also made high-value beads of baked magnesite. Baking magnesite nodules changed their color to an attractive orange, and they were then shaped into cylinders, ground, drilled, and strung. A single magnesite bead of good color was worth 800 clamshell beads. This lot has two mounted magnesite beads plus a pamphlet about them. See Don Taxay, Money of the American Indians (Flushing, N.Y., 1970), pp. 68-69; Lois Sherr Dubin, North American Indian Jewelry and Adornment (New York, 1999), p. 434; and Opitz, p. 56.
