Undated (1842). C. Bechtler $5 Gold. Kagin-26. Rarity-8. With 134 G., No Star. Reeded Edge. AU-53 PCGS. CAC.
This bright and satiny yellow gold half eagle displays a sheen of attractive olive iridescence and a goodly amount of luster. A loupe uncovers some light marks and pebbling on both sides though most shortfalls go unnoticed by the naked eye. A high wire “fin” engages the rims in places on both sides. This specimen served as the plate coin in Breen’s 1988 Encyclopedia, where the author noted “2 known.” Just when you think you have the population figured out, another specimen shows up – isn’t that often the way in numismatics? We too subscribed to the “two known” theory, but seemingly PCGS has certified three examples of Kagin-26. There is a listing at VF-20, the present coin at AU-53, and an AU-58 event – that’s the PCGS-certified roster as it stands today. We haven't seen the VF specimen but don't think it's the upgraded AU specimen. The AU-53 offered here in the Allan Collection hasn’t been resubmitted, so it looks like the PCGS tally for this Rarity-8 variety is now three pieces. The present coin is a prime example of the grade and rarity combination that is so desirable with today’s collectors. You may have to wait the better part of a numismatic eternity before either of the other two examples of Kagin-26 come into the marketplace, or you can enjoy the numismatic here and now and cast your bid for the sure thing offered in the Allan Collection. Just be certain to aim high at bidding time!
