Undated (1842-1850). A. Bechtler $1 Gold. Kagin-25. Rarity-7. 27 G., 21 Carats. Reeded Edge. Carolina Gold. AU-58 PCGS.
This frosty and lustrous bright lemon yellow specimen enjoys a sheen of attractive olive iridescence throughout. This attractive dollar was struck on a somewhat wavy planchet, not an unusual occurrence for these early gold dollars. Some pocket-change hairlines and some natural central planchet flaws are seen on the obverse, best under low magnification, while the reverse exhibits faint marks at B, LER, and the star though you won’t find these easily without magnified assistance. Relatively large and sharp saw-tooth dentils on obverse, reverse dentils a mix of small saw-tooth and blunt dentils. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of just seven known examples of K-25 extant! And, it is hands down the finest example seen by PCGS. We constantly refer to “specialists” in our descriptions, collectors who, more often than not, are the persons in the hobby who make the most difference when auction competition is the focus. We all dream of rarities for our various collections, but specialists don’t dream, they do their homework and take action accordingly, and so can you. Coins like the present specimen always bring out the best in bidders, specialist or otherwise, and we expect serious action from both sides of the equation – after all, you don’t need to be a specialist to take home the prize.
The reverse die provides an insight into the state of August Bechtler’s gold coinage operations. For instance, the B of BECHTLER is lightly double-punched; the E is filled with die chips and its upper left serif is a thin and tenuous line; the crossbar of the H and its lower right serif are thin afterthoughts in the die; and the baseline of the L is seemingly added to the die by hand.

Obverse: CAROLINA GOLD. around rim from 8 to 4 o’clock, 27.G. at center, 21.C. at rim below.
Reverse: Numeral 1 at center, A.BECHTLER. arcs above, DOL: and a five-pointed star curve below.
Die Alignment: about 200 degrees, just past coin turn.

PCGS Population: 1; none finer.
