Undated (1842-1846). A. Bechtler $5 Gold. Kagin-29. Rarity-6+. With 141 G., 20 Carats. Reeded Edge. AU-53 PCGS.
The bright yellow gold surfaces of this attractive half eagle display splashes of warm tan-gold toning in a bright light source. Essentially unmarked to the unaided eye save for a natural planchet void, as struck, at ER in BECHTLER on the reverse. Low magnification reveals some pocket-change hairlines but few other marks of any degree on either side. Some lively mint frost engages the deepest design elements of the coin and adds greatly to the overall visual quality.

In all, only 15 specimens are known including those impounded. The present example of K-29 is ranked among the four finest certification events registered with PCGS, with two rated slightly higher by NGC. No mean feat considering the pressing need for circulating coinage and the heavy commercial use many of the Bechtler coins experienced. To be among the finest surviving examples of this variety is either a matter of chance or design. Perhaps some long-ago numismatist smartly added it to a cabinet from where it passed through the hands of other caring stewards for the past 165 years or so, or maybe it simply languished in a dresser drawer from generation to generation in an unnamed family. The possible scenarios of this coin’s survival are nearly limitless – the reader is free to write is or her own little scenario for this well-preserved piece of American coinage history. We expect more than just casual bidding for this rare variety, so plan your strategy well.
