Undated (1842-1846). A. Bechtler $5 Gold. Kagin-28. Rarity-5+. With 128 G., 22 Carats. Reeded Edge. AU-53 PCGS. CAC.
The dusky golden surfaces of this Carolina half eagle enjoy some deepening lilac-gold at the rims and a whisper of pale blue and rose throughout. A refreshing amount of soft mint luster is seen in the protected design areas. Marks are minimal to the unaided eye, and a loupe discloses the tiny marks a collector should expect from a lightly circulated soft gold coin and precious little else; no mark is worthy of individual discourse here. We note a trifling spot of weakness in the reverse design at the rim at 9 o’clock that softly affects the A in the family name. Of the five examples of K-28 called AU-53 or finer by PCGS, just one is a Mint State coin, and that is called MS-61 which brought $52,900 at an ANR auction over a decade ago. We like this coin better than the other AU PCGS coin and the two NGC 55's we've seen. We therefore believe it is the second finest known.

Less than two dozen examples of this variety can be found with the present coin, the second of finest example. Novice or nabob, this coin would make an excellent addition to a growing pioneer gold collection.

Obverse: CAROLINA GOLD at rim from 8 to 4 o’clock around, 128.G: at center, 22 below, small CARATS. curves below.
Reverse: A. BECHTLER. RUTHERFORD. and star around, 5 at center, DOLLARS. curves below.
Die Alignment: about 45 degrees, somewhat past medal turn.

PCGS Population: 3; 2 finer (MS-61 finest).
NGC Census: 2 (both AU-55).
