Undated (1842-1846). A. Bechtler $5 Gold. Kagin-27. Rarity-5. With 134 G., 21 Carats. Reeded Edge. AU-58 PCGS. CAC.
This satiny medium gold specimen exhibits wisps of pale blue and rose iridescence on the obverse while the reverse is aglow with deep orange-red toning in the protected areas of the legend. Other than some hairlines, the naked eye is hard-pressed to detect a blemish of any note on either side, and magnified scrutiny tells much the same tale. Though rated Rarity-5 overall, this reportedly “common” variety is anything but common in high grade – and “high grade” begins and ends with AU-58 for K-27; there are no Mint State examples of the variety currently known in a PCGS holder, and just a pair at AU-58 including the present coin. NGC has certified an MS-64 and an MS-60. You can do worse than the present specimen, but in today’s numismatic marketplace, you can’t do any better if it’s a PCGS-certified example of the variety you are after. Bid convincingly or this will be just another lot that got away.
