Undated (1834). C. Bechtler $5 Gold. Kagin-22. Rarity-6. With 128 G., Star. Plain Edge. Georgia Gold. Prooflike. MS-63 PCGS.
This sparkling bright yellow gold specimen is boldly lustrous and exhibits a trace of pale olive iridescence throughout. Some hairlines grace the reflective obverse field and a patch of tiny scratches is noted at the 8 and the star immediately beneath, otherwise the eye appeal is superb. The reverse shows a mark at the rim at 6 o’clock, otherwise its matte-like expanse is untroubled by blemishes. Though not officially designated “prooflike” by PCGS, one glance at the obverse will suffice for most collectors to get on board with the designation. The reverse, on the other hand, is satiny and frosty with an overall matte-like appearance; its reflective nature is somewhat subdued by comparison. It is always an event when a rarity is offered, especially when the coin can stake a claim for finest known honors. The present example of K-22 is tied for finest certified of the variety by PCGS, and the next finest after that is a solitary AU-58 example. By now our bidders have no doubt seen amazing bidding opportunities come and go as the Allan Collection has unfolded. Here is yet another “golden” opportunity for an advanced collector of Bechtler pioneer gold to add to a cabinet that may one day be as complete and geared toward quality as the Allan cabinet.

Obverse: GEORGIA GOLD. at rim from 9 to 3 o’clock around, 128.G. at center, inverted five-pointed star beneath, 22 CARATS. curves at rim beneath star.
Reverse: C. BECHTLER. AT RUTHERFORD. and star around, 5 at center, DOLLARS. curves below.
Die Alignment: about 350 degrees, nearly medal turn.

PCGS Population: 2; none finer.
