Undated (1834). C. Bechtler $5 Gold. Kagin-21. Rarity-7. With 128 G., Star. Plain Edge. Georgia Gold. AU-58 PCGS. CAC.
This deep golden specimen displays a wealth of bright peach and pale violet on the obverse courtesy of a bold light source, while the reverse displays a panorama of dusky rose, pale orange, and pale sky blue iridescence throughout. We also note a modicum of reflectivity in places on the obverse. One of just two examples of the variety called AU-58 by PCGS, with no Mint State examples certified. In fact, only a half dozen examples of K-21 have been certified to date by PCGS in any grade. The present piece is tied for finest certified by that firm. We believe this to be the superior coin. NGC has also certified a specimen in MS-61. We consider the coins to be similar in quality. Its visual integrity is upheld by the toning which causes some visible hairlines to mostly fade into the background. Further, there are no blemishes or unsightly digs on the surfaces, no doubt one of several reasons this example boasts a CAC sticker. Here, then, is another spectacular opportunity afforded by the offering of the Allan Collection. In a sale of such depth and quality, it is not an easy chore to select highlights, but this coin definitely wears the highlight mantel in our opinion. Hold your bidding paddle high for this specimen or be left out when the hammer falls.
