Undated (1834-1840) C. Bechtler $2.50 Gold. Kagin-10. Rarity-5+. MS-62 NGC.
This dusky gray-gold specimen exhibits neon blue and fiery rose iridescence in a bold light source. Soft underlying luster is present on both sides, especially the reverse. From the cracked state of the obverse with cracks rushing toward the center from the rim at 9, 10, and 12 o’clock. Kagin-10 is one of the more available varieties and often makes an appearance in gateway collections or type sets. The Allan specimen offered here would make for a welcomed addition to any holdings, beginner or old-timer alike, and we suspect the bidding activity for this lot will be spirited.

Obverse: BECHTLER. RUTHERF: around, 2.50. at center.
Reverse: CAROLINA GOLD. arcing around, 67.G. at upper center, 21. beneath, CARATS beneath at bottom of rim.
Die Alignment: about 150 degrees, nearly coin turn.

NGC Census: 5; 2 finer (MS-63).
