Undated (1834-1837) C. Bechtler Gold Dollar. Kagin-3a. Rarity-8. 28.G Centered, Plain Edge. EF-45 PCGS.
The deep golden orange surfaces of this modestly but evenly circulated example exhibit splashes of bold iridescent orange-violet in a bright light source. The sole “naked eye” blemish on either side is noted in the field beneath 28 and has long since toned to the same depths as the entire coin, suggesting its contemporary 19th century pocket change origin. A loupe reveals scattered chattering that escapes the naked eye on the obverse, with fainter marks but some hairlines seen on the reverse. Minor blemishes aside, it is worth noting that the present specimen is one of just two examples of Kagin-3a currently known, as well as the only example of the variety certified by PCGS. We expect many collectors and specialists of the private gold discipline will “gang-up” on this rarity at bidding time, driving the price up until one fortunate bidder is left with his or her paddle in the air. Let us say “congratulations” ahead of time to the next steward of this classic rarity!
