Undated (1834-1837) C. Bechtler Gold Dollar. Kagin-3. Rarity-6+. 28.G Centered, Reeded Edge. AU-58 PCGS.
The deep smoky orange-gold fields of this attractive gold dollar offset the lustrous yellow brilliance of the protected design areas. Wisps of blue and olive reward the viewer when seen in a bold light source. No marks are present when viewed with the naked eye other than a pencil-point sized depression in the field beneath the first L of DOLLAR, there no doubt when struck. An 8X loupe fares no better than the unaided eye in the present instance – the surfaces are virtually free of all but some scattered hairlines. Whether you are seeking a high-quality example of a Bechtler gold dollar for type purposes or looking specifically for a pleasing example of K-3, you need search no further. There is only three grading points difference between this specimen and the finest example of the variety certified by PCGS, see below, so perhaps bidding on this Condition Census example is a smart move for interested parties.

From an obviously repolished reverse die; the lettering is thinner than that of Kagin-2, though all letter punches used and placements of the letters is identical. Here the legends are thinner and more elegant due to the polishing process – the same die, but presenting a somewhat less crude appearance than that of K-2. Similar evidence is noted on the obverse though there it is not so extreme.

Obverse: C: BECHTLER. RUTHERF: around, 28. G. evenly centered, nothing beneath.
Reverse: N: CAROLINA GOLD. DOLLAR. around, ONE at center.
Die Alignment: 180 degrees or coin turn.

PCGS Population: 6; 2 finer (both MS-61).
NGC Population: 4; 2 (both MS-62) and 2 (both MS-61).

Ex: From the Allen Collection.
