Undated (1834-1837) C. Bechtler Gold Dollar. Kagin-2a. Rarity-8, Unique. 28.G High, Plain Edge. AU-55 PCGS. CAC.
Warm olive highlights grace the lustrous golden surfaces of this briefly circulated plain edge rarity. The lightly frosted surfaces betray no marks of any consequence to the unaided eye, and a loupe fails to produce a mark of any import. An area of light die collapse has resulted in a “swollen” area in the planchet beneath the denomination ONE; this swollen area shows the only significant signs of circulation overall. Choice is the operative word here, and the present coin lives up to the fullest potential of the AU-55 grade. Indeed, we love this coin as much as CAC, who bestowed their mark of extra quality on the present piece upon first sight. This plain edge rarity is on par with Kagin-1a offered in lot 194 above, unique, and as such represents a near once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for serious students of the private coinage of America's first Gold Rush. You have just this one opportunity to acquire Kagin-2a for your cabinet – at least for the foreseeable future – so bid as though you mean it if you to want to earn this prize from the Allan Collection.
