Header: Uncirculated C. Bechtler Gold $1 Rarity
Kagin-2, 28 G High

Description: Dies as illustrated. This lustrous deep olive-gold example offers lively luster and an undertone of faint gray-gold on the obverse; the reverse is brilliant and lustrous olive-gold. It takes a loupe to find any surface disturbances, and those you may find amount to little more than some stray hairlines. First glance reveals a Plain Edge rarity (K-2a) and would have been the second known example, but there is reeding, albeit faint and only found in a few places. Of the eight grading events noted for this Bechtler $1 rarity at NGC, half are AU, and the other half are Mint State. By way of comparison, PCGS shows just two Uncirculated grading events for this rare variety, and both of those are MS-61. These third-party certification numbers speak for themselves and only serve to highlight the true rarity of Kagin-2 – it’s High Rarity-6 number still holds true today. The present specimen is definitively Condition Census for the variety, and easily among the finest examples of Kagin-2 extant. This lot is where the bidding gets tough and the tough bidders get going.

NGC Census: 3; 1 finer (MS-64).
