Undated (1831-1834) C. Bechtler $2.50 Gold. Kagin-7. Rarity-8. With 75 G, CAROLINA at top. Genuine PCGS. EF-AU Details.
A bright yellow gold example with some light olive iridescence. Probably lightly cleaned at some point with surfaces that play host to nearly innumerable tiny pecks that show up under low magnification. Additionally, there is smoothing seen in places on both sides. Still, this coin is attractive despite the litany of shortcomings, most of which require the use of a loupe to locate. One of just two examples of the K-7 variety known, and the other is impounded at the Smithsonian Institution! This is the only graded K-7 specimen! Indeed, the rarity of the variety is near-legendary in the scope of all things Bechtler. We note that PCGS has not listed another example of K-7 in any grade. As many seasoned private gold aficionados will tell you, the occasional appearance at auction of Kagin-7 is typically a time when the wheat is separated from the chaff among bidders. You must be well prepared to capture this numismatic private gold treasure!
