Undated (1831-1834) C. Bechtler $2.50 Gold. Kagin-6. Rarity-7. No 75 G, Coarse Beads. MS-61 NGC.
This brightly lustrous yellow gold specimen enjoys a whisper of olive iridescence throughout. The centering is spot-on for the obverse though the reverse is slightly off-center toward the 10 o'clock position. This attractive rarity displays a few faint marks to the unaided eye and then a few more under low magnification, the most egregious an old, shallow horizontal scratch above the 25 of the denomination. Despite this and some scattered hairlines, the in-hand integrity of the coin is superb overall. This classic from the early days of Christoph Bechtler's handiwork conformed nicely to government coinage of the same denomination; the elder Bechtler's coins were never questioned as to gold content and they circulated right along with U.S. regular issues for decades in Georgia and the Carolinas. We feel the present Uncirculated example of Kagin-6 is the second finest known to us; the finest is tucked away in an advanced collection and is unavailable to the marketplace. Of course, this sheds an even brighter light on the present specimen. You can't, at this time, enjoy stewardship of the finest example of K-6, but the “runner-up” offered here is nothing to be sneezed at. Once this coin finds its way into an advanced cabinet of private gold issues, it will leave underbidders with that all too familiar empty feeling. We suggest you bid as though you mean it for this Bechtler quarter eagle!
