Undated (1792-1794) Kentucky Token. Breen-1154-55 for Type, D&H-59c, Lancashire. Plain Edge. Mint Error – Mis-Punched Planchet -- AU-55 PCGS.
A deep golden tan specimen with plenty of innate eye appeal and no circulation marks of any measure. Struck nominally off-center to the left, affecting both sides; on the reverse, the rim touches the top of E in the motto. Choice for the grade, easy on the senses, and a piece with a story to tell.
The “Mint Error” part is true, but the “Mis-Punched Planchet” part needs some further attention. A curved line, part of a complete circle, can be seen on the obverse from the E in THE clockwise through STRENGTH and then to the rim above OF; a fainter line appears in the exact same place on the reverse. Those who study and collect the early state coppers of America – Connecticut, New Jersey, Vermont, and Massachusetts – are familiar with this sort of circular planchet indentation. These marks are from a round planchet cutter and are known as planchet cutter “lips” or planchet cutter marks. Evidently this previously cut planchet was pinched at some point by a planchet cutter, either before or after striking, though that is difficult to determine. We go with prior to striking as the reverse mark is flattened and pressed in places, no doubt from the pressure from the dies.
