Undated (1778) Washington Voltaire Medal. Baker-78b, Betts-544. Bronze. Plain Edge. EF.

40 mm. Deep golden brown with chocolate-brown highlights among the devices; the fields are somewhat prooflike in appearance. Some cakey detritus is found on the obverse, most notably at 9 o’clock in the legend and in the field before the portrait; these areas seem easily remedied with judicious care and conservation. Some planchet roughness, as struck, is noted at the reverse center. Considered the first collectable Washington medal, the Voltaire pieces are inexorably sought by collectors for that reason. Issued in Europe at the height of the Revolution, this medal served to further the American cause abroad. A medal with an interesting tale to tell.
