The Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations in New England. Newport. August 15, 1737, Redated 1738. Three Pounds or Sixty Shillings. Fr. RI-27bCF. PCGS Very Good-10 Details. Multiple Repairs, Pieces Added. As illustrated.

Description: Laid paper. Serial number illegible. Signed by James Sheffield, John Gardner, and John Wanton. Printed by William Claggett. Two-Sided, only a faint trace of the back vignette is visible. 120mm by 70mm. Another somewhat controversial note from “Little Rhody.” Considered a period counterfeit by Neman, and then considered genuine by Ford. Now, PCGS holds the latest hand for that call; the note is now back in the counterfeit realm. It is a moot point no matter which side of the controversy you favor. This well-circulated note saw a near-lifetime of circulation, genuine or otherwise, suggesting it fooled all the people, all the time. Still, it is a piece that fares far better in-hand than in the eyes of PCGS. The paper is medium tan in hue, the ink is strong for the grade, save for the back, as noted earlier. There are very few numismatists who would turn down an opportunity to obtain an extremely rare coin because of a few minor blemishes or faults. Colonial paper specialists also know that rule of thumb by heart: go for it now, or go without it for who can say how long.
