The Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations in New England. Newport. August 15, 1737, Redated 1738. Two Pounds or Forty Shillings. Fr. RI-26b. PCGS Extremely Fine-40 Details. Small Restorations. As illustrated.

Description: Laid paper. Serial No. 4379. Signed by J. Brenton, James Sheffield, and John Potter. Printed by William Claggett. Two-Sided. 128mm by 70mm. A possible period counterfeit. The Ford writer touched on the nature of the note succinctly, noting: “A Contemporary Counterfeit, so cited in Newman. However, very well executed and not considered a contemporary counterfeit by Mr. Ford.” This unusually attractive note, evenly centered and boldly impressed, is certainly fine enough in details to our eyes to fool the experts, which it has at least once. The Newman Plate Note. This impressive Rhode Island note is readily among the finest survivors of the issue. The Ford cataloger thought highly of this beauty, noting: “very few notes probably survive on this issue date, and this might be the finest example existing.” Issued at a time when silver was valued at 27 shillings to the ounce. (It may have taken an awful lot of faith to accept a piece of paper printed “Two Pounds or Forty Shillings” when that much silver was at stake.) Simply exceptional at every glance, and from any angle. One for the specialists and Rhode Island experts.
