The Colony of Rhoad Island and Providence Plantations in New England. Newport. July 5, 1715, Redated 1728. Three Shillings Indented Bill, Raised to Thirty Shillings. Fr. RI-11eAL. PCGS Very Fine-20 Details. Multiple Repairs, Severed and Reattached, Minor Design Redrawn. As illustrated.

Description: Quaint “Rhoad” Island spelling. Laid paper. Serial No. 1627. Signed by John Wanton, Geo. Goulding, and Jahleel Brenton. Printed by Samuel Vernon. Two-Sided. 109mm by 135mm. A genuine Three Shillings note, itself a rarity, with its denomination raised spuriously to Thirty Shillings, both in the numeric denomination by adding a “0” to the existing “3,” and changing “Three” in the text to “Thirty.” Newman Plate Note. Scalloped top, evenly bordered on the three remaining sides. The printing and signatures are bold and fresh given the grade, but the ink used to change the denomination in two places has not fared well. In fact, those features stand out like the proverbial sore thumb -- and probably did so at the time the note was first introduced to commerce. The Ford writer called this note “One of the greatest rarities on the Colony, genuine and extremely important.” A neat piece, and a rare Rhode Island note, missing from nearly all of the colonial note and advanced Rhode Island note cabinets currently being formed.
