Stunning 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition So-Called $1
Hibbler Kappen-401. California. San Francisco. 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition SC$1. Official Medal. Hibbler Kappen-401. Gilt. Plain Edge. Medal Turn. 36 mm. MS-65 NGC. Obv: standing figure of Hermes in canal lock, caduceus in outstretched right arm, mythological ship Argo at full sail passing through canal on fanciful waves, “On. Sail On!” in field below Argo, TO COMMEMORATE THE OPENING OF THE PANAMA CANAL MCMXV around, AITKEN / FECIT below waves at 5 o’clock. Rev: central globe depicting Western Hemisphere between two female figures, perhaps Hope and Plenty, holding cornucopia aloft, seabird symbolic of canal below, PANAMA PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA MCMXV around. This bright and intensely lustrous specimen is easily worthy of the Gem assessment. The softly mattelike fields enjoy a colorful wealth of gold and orange toning throughout. The gilt has given way to the bronze planchet beneath from 6 to 7 o’clock on the obverse rim, otherwise the surfaces are close to pristine. This official medal was designed by Robert Aitken, who is perhaps best known for his beautiful Panama-Pacific $50 Round and Octagonal coinage designs, also sold at the Exposition SC$1. The gilt examples of this popular “Official Medal,” as here, sold for 50¢ each. A beauty!
