State of Pennsylvania. June 1, 1780. Twenty Spanish Milled Dollars. Fr. PA-240. PCGS Choice Very Fine-35 Details. Partially Removed Stain. As illustrated.

Description: Rigid stock watermarked CONFEDERATION. Serial No. 1. Signed by Cather and Wister, countersigned on the back by R. Bache. Two-Sided. Printed by Hall and Sellers, black face, black and red back. 99mm by 73mm. Pennsylvania spelling in text. Guaranteed Note. An amazing example of the issue and denomination. Golden paper with bold inking details, the second signature faded. Evenly margined for the most part, with a solid in-hand appearance that can only delight and excite a serious collector. “Like the New-York Guaranteed Bills, this is a very rare series,” wrote the Ford cataloger, going on to say “any note from the Act is hard to come by and significant.” Any Serial Number 1 colonial note is an extreme rarity, and the present beauty is no exception. The rarity was explained quite clearly by the Ford writer when he exclaimed: “We have never seen or heard of a number 1 note on the entire Guaranteed genre.” Once a part of a multi-piece Ford lot, we suspect this piece could bring multiples of what the entire Ford lot realized, but that remains to be seen. This note represents the ultimate acquisition for an alert collector.
