State of North-Carolina. May 15, 1779 Act of Assembly at Smithfield. One Hundred Spanish Milled Dollars. Fr. NC-188CF. PCGS Very Fine-30. No qualifiers. As illustrated.

Description: A Free Commerce. Thick white paper. Serial No. 404. “Signed” by John Taylor and J. Hunt. Two-Sided. “Printed” by Hugh Walker, Wilmington. 99mm by 65mm. Death to Counterfeit. A classic admonition, especially on a counterfeit note. (We would like to think the counterfeiter snickered at the irony.) Perhaps a trifle soiled, but not to any disturbing extent, and in precisely the condition it was when offered in Ford. “HC/622” penciled notation in back margin. DQLLARS in right face margin instead of DOLLARS. A neat note, not signed by Taylor and Hunt, and not printed by Walker. There is no telling how many hands this note passed through before it was singled out as bogus. Fortunately, it was put aside by a specialist at some point, and has come down to another generation of collectors to study and appreciate.
