State of North-Carolina. May 15, 1779 Act of Assembly at Smithfield. Fifty Spanish Milled Dollars. Fr. NC-187. PCGS Very Fine-25 Details. Repairs, Masking. As illustrated.

Description: A Righteous Cause the Protection of Providence. Thick white paper. Serial No. 1859. Signed by John Taylor and J. Hunt. Two-Sided. Printed by Hugh Walker, Wilmington. 99mm by 65mm. Death to Counterfeit. Just 2,000 were printed of the Fifty Dollars issue, and it is a difficult denomination to obtain in any grade. This modestly graded and modestly conserved piece still offers up a world of charm and quality for the assigned grade. “A rarer type in this collection,” the Ford cataloger wrote regarding this note, and its stature has not changed much in the ensuing 28 years.

Pedigree: Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate; Stack’s sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XV, October, 2006, Lot 8493. (Ford Price Realized: $316.25)
