Description: Thin paper watermarked CONFEDERATION. Serial No. 264. “Signed” by Evert Bancker and Henry Rutgers; “countersigned” on back by Abraham Yates, Jr. “Printed” by Hall and Sellers. Two-Sided, red inking on verso. 96mm by 74mm. The golden paper supports evenly inked face and back details, the red bright on verso. Only 1,413 genuine notes of this denomination were printed, and any surviving example should be considered rare. Not as well defined as a genuine note, the present period counterfeit did not fool any sharp-eyed merchant – perhaps that’s the reason for the decisive canceling method. The Ford writer described the status and rarity of this note admirably: “You know a series is rare when its counterfeit type is well regarded. This Newman-listed counterfeit is a rare one. It is printed on properly watermarked paper that is brighter white than normally seen.” Perhaps it did fool a merchant or two, but we are aware of its status today. Period counterfeits are as eagerly pursued today as in the heydays of Chapman, Clarke, Boyd, and Ford. We look forward to the next name in the pedigree chain.
