State of New-York. April 18, 1786. Contemporary Counterfeit Three Pounds. Fr. NY-226CF. PCGS Very Fine-25 Details. Repairs, Contemporary Annotation. As illustrated.

Description: Laid paper. Serial No. 3498. “Signed” by Wm. Heyer and J. Lawrence. “Printed” by S. Loudon. Uniface. 97mm by 59mm. A conservatively graded note with warm golden paper and fairly bold inking. Finely centered, and with complex design intricacies likely enough to fool many people in a hustle-bustle location such as Albany or New-York City. This appealing note comes complete with an interesting history that verifies its counterfeit status. The back is pen-endorsed, in cursive and of the period, reading “Received of Mr. Henry Garrison, Jr., Febr. 17th, 1788 – and condemned by Messr/ Heyer and Lawrence.” Boyd’s penciled “mmxy” on lower back. A well-regarded rarity for decades, even before John J. Ford, Jr’s. acquisition of the note decades ago. One for the completist.

Pedigree: Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate; Stack’s sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XV, October, 2006, Lot 8359. (Ford Price Realized: $1,265)
