Description: Thinner rigid paper watermarked NEW JERSEY. Serial No. 3208. Signed by Maskell Ewing and Ben. Van Cleve. Two-Sided, red and blue face, black back. Leaf back. Printed by Isaac Collins, Trenton. Standard size. Tis Death To Counterfeit. An impressive example of a prized rarity, one for which many a grand colonial note cabinet has gone a-wishing. Historically important to the collector of New-Jersey Colonial notes as the final of that State’s issues. The Ford specialist wrote “This series circulated and is priced in Newman in grades up to Fine only. However, this is superbly misleading as any note from this series, in any grade, is a rarity.” The red and blue inks on the face are bold and pop-out in appearance, and the golden paper of the note makes for an amply pleasing backdrop. Lest we forget, the black back is deeply inked and fresh in appearance as well. Only 5,000 notes of this denomination were printed, most of those falling victim to recall and destruction or simple circulation attrition. “An extraordinary note for the specialist,” as written in the Ford catalog. Its extraordinary nature has not changed one bit since the Ford offering, and we cannot see the diagnosis changing much in the foreseeable future.
