State of Maryland. 10th Day of M.DCC.LXXXI (May 10, 1781). Three Pounds or Eight Dollars. Fr. MD-134. PCGS Very Fine-30 Details. Minor Masking. As illustrated.

Description: Thick laid paper. No Serial number. Signed by Callahan and Harwood. Printed by F. Green, Annapolis. 93mm by 71mm. Two-Sided. This issue was to be backed by confiscated Tory properties! Over 30,000 of these “red note” pieces were printed of this denomination, but cancellations and attrition have narrowed the availability of the notes to but a small percentage of the actual press run. The present note is no doubt of Condition Census quality. Bold red borders only minimally faded, the same for the reverse vignette. At the time of the Ford sale, the Newman catalog value for this note was $800 in VF – it realized substantially more than that the first time it was offered. This is one of those notes where the sky is the limit, as proven once before in Ford, and as about to be proven once again.

Pedigree: From Stack’s sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part 10, May, 2005, Lot 4627. (Ford Price Realized: $6,325)
