Spoon. 1883 (?) Enameled Hawaii Akahi Dala or Dollar Reverse in Sterling Silver Spoon. Sterling Handle Attached. Overall AU. The bowl of this broad spoon measures 56 mm across with the handle extending the spoon’s length to just shy of 6” altogether. The field of the Hawaii piece is navy-blue enamel with silver letters and denomination, while the field of the central Arms is white draped in red with gold enamel highlights. The back of the bowl reads MADE IN / HONOLULU with -HC- between, and with STERLING appearing on each side of the monogram. The handle is an upright of Hawaii’s King Kamehameha with his name vertically up the handle; the back of the handle reads GULMAN STERLING. Neat and intriguing, and a must for collectors of Hawaiiana.
We can’t decide whether this is a planed-off reverse of an 1883 Hawaii dollar or an advanced and incredibly similar likeness; the bowl is certainly too thin to hold a dollar coin of normal thickness. There are no noticeable traces of edge reeding, but the reeds could have been filed off as well to make for a smooth fit in the bowl of the spoon.
