Title: Spain. Seville. Ferdinand and Isabella. Circa 1469-1504 Silver 8 Reales. Cayon-2843. AU-55 NGC.
Description: Dies as illustrated. The lively silver-gray surfaces provide a good look into the somewhat crudely yet intricately designed 8-reales coinage of the era. Warm golden iridescence is seen among the design details. Big and broad, yet not noticeably marked on either side other than some natural planchet occurrences. A planchet split is noted at the obverse rim just shy of 9 o’clock, and some natural, unstruck roughness is seen in the same position on the reverse. Impressed ore than once by the dies, not unusual for these large silver pieces. This is the stuff of which Isabella paid to finance the voyage of Columbus in 1492. Neat and appealing, both physically and historically.
