South Carolina. March 6, 1776. Resolve of Congress Seventeen Shillings and Six Pence. Fr. SC-119. PCGS Choice Very Fine-35 Details. Repaired Edge Splits. As illustrated.

Description: Laid paper. Serial No. possibly 4917. Signed by N. Russell and Wm. Doughty. Printed by Peter Timothy. Uniface, black and red face. 44mm by 84mm. A bright and impeccable note with charm and appeal that reach well beyond the limits of the Very Fine designation to our eyes. Evenly margined and richly inked, the red and black strong, and the signatures barely faded. “A specialized but significant note, and a great rarity,” wrote the Ford expert. From a total of 10,000 notes printed, though most of those were well-worn or redeemed later for higher denomination notes. A shining example of the type from that all-important year, 1776.

Pedigree: From Stack’s sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XV, October, 2006, Lot 8701. (Ford Price Realized: $2,990)
