Title: Small Red Feather Money
Description: Santa Cruz Red Feather Money, an unusual small-- 6cm width—rectangular specimen of this very popular piece. A little faded but otherwise very fine, approximately Grade 6. The tiny feathers are those of the hone-bird (Myzomela cardinalis), a sparrow-sized bird with mainly black plumage but with red on head and breast. The feathers were painstakingly overlapped on fiber belts. Feathers from a minimum of 400 birds were required for a fantastic coil offered earlier in the Opitz collection. This section is an ideal display piece, because it shows the construction of this amazing currency without the need to wrestle with the full 30-foot length. See Opitz pp. 142-43.
