Scarce Signature Combination on Rare Anti-Banking $3. 1837 $3 Kirtland Safety Society Bank. Kirtland, OH. Anti-Banking. PMG Very Fine 30. Nyholm 10. Rust 14. S/N 2053 January 4. This is a very attractive note with sharp corners and only a couple of minor pinholes to note. These signatures are also the reverse of normal with Rigdon on the left and Smith on the right.
A scarce “Anti-Banking” $3 with probably no more than 30 or so examples extant. Of the variants of Kirtland Banknotes only $1, $2, and $3 notes were modified with the Anti-Banking stamps. This was done due to the failure to acquire a valid Ohio state bank charter and it was thought that if the establishment was not called a bank it might somehow be acceptable. The practice was soon dropped and notes were issued as printed. The other modification was the over-stamping and blocking out the titles of President and Cashier, most likely in an additional effort to dissociate the note as being a bank.
About 30 known.
