Obv: central standing figure of Columbia dividing and crowning seated figures of Industry and Agriculture, MECHANIC’S’ INSTITUTE arcs above, SAN FRANCISCO on a lozenge above the exergue. Rev: large laurel wreath with berries, INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION at upper rim, AWARDED TO closes top of wreath, DAVID KERR. / FOR BEST / TWO HORSE TRUCK engraved on three lines within wreath, 1886 incused on lozenge at very bottom. Dies by Alfred Kuner; on this particular die, the designers’ initials, WR & HD, as well as Kuner’s name, have all been mostly effaced form the die. Boldly lustrous yellow-gold throughout with intensely reflective fields and frosted motifs that hold warm sunset orange tones at the rims. Despite scattered marks and light rim ticks from mishandling – and fineness test cuts -- over the past 131 years, this is still a wholly presentable example of a rare and highly collectable gold medal issue.
