Rare and High Quality Countersigned $5 Kirtland Note. 1837 $5 Kirtland Safety Society Bank. Kirtland, OH. Countersigned. Nyholm 8. Rust 70. PMG Very Fine 25. S/N 1442 March 21. This note is a bright and well preserved example with no pinholes or significant blemishes other than normal wear and a slight bleed or rust spot on the last digit of the serial number. As on the $10 note, Heber C. Kimball intentionally and boldly signed his signature on top of Sidney Rigdon’s.
A second key rarity in the Kirtland series to be offered in this auction. Although the $5 is the most common Kirtland denomination, as a countersigned example, it jumps significantly in rarity and desirability. As noted with the $10 countersigned example that follows, the signatures applied to this note are identical with the only difference being this note is made To: W. Parish.

Countersigned notes by; Brigham Young, N.K. Whitney, Heber C. Kimball and Thomas Bullock ("TB"), are available only in the lower denominations $1 through $10. It is not known why any of the higher denominations were not re-issued. The $5 and $10’s are occasionally available with the $1, $2, and $3 countersigned issues being much rarer.
Of the 135 initially issued, less than 40 are known today. Tied with nine others at VF-25 and only 3 are known in VF-30. None finer.
