Title: (b)Rare, Pristine Kukukuku Salt Barv[b]
Description: The tiny (population 1,500) Baruya Tribe, part of the Kukukuku people, who lived in the Eastern Highlands of New Guinea, obtained salt by dissolving it from coix grass ashes. The resulting brine was then poured into molds and evaporated by the Master of the Salt Magic. When crystallized, the salt was formed into bars 24" to 28" long, shaped, wrapped in banana leaves, and sewn up with bark. Sizes of the bars varied; two to three of the largest would purchase a male pig. This lot has a rare, pristine example of one of these large salt bars, illustrated in the NNP edition, p. 482, right, second from top.
