Title: Rare G.G. Type: 5 in Pop Report, Tied for Finest
Description: 1853 G G. round ¼ Dollar, BG-217. Die State II (repolished), PCGS MS62. High Rarity 7. Struck by Frontier, Deviercy & Co. for the French jewelers Gaime, Guillemot & Co., Montgomery Street, San Francisco. This firm consisted of Hippolyte Gaime and Chas. (Charles-Joseph) Guillemot, who sailed from Havre, France, for New York on the Havre May 15, 1848. Together they brought five chests of baggage. It was not until May 21, 1852, however, that a member of the firm arrived in San Francisco on the U.S. mail steamer S.S. Golden Gate, disembarking the next day and setting to work immediately; the firm's first ad appeared in the Alta California May 30, and they opened for business the next day. Though primarily an importer of diamonds, they issued a set of $1/4, $1/2, and $1 round coins. The firm of Gaime, Guillemot & Co. dissolved April 21, 1854.
While Jay Roe considered the entire G.G. series to be patterns, some reached circulation because at least one was recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Winfield Scott, which sailed December 1, 1853. Very neat work; large head, G G. below, 13 stars around, 12th star not in line with G G.; reverse of BG-213. Only 6 examples known (5 in Pop Report). Very Sharply struck, reflective, Brilliant Uncirculated. PCGS MS62 William C. O’Connor (PCGS# 10402). PCGS POP 2 + 0.
