Province of ye Massachusetts Bay. June 20, 1744. Two Pence, New Tenor (Eight Pence, Old Tenor). Fr. MA-120. PCGS Extremely Fine-40 Details. Repaired Splits, Masking. As illustrated.

Description: Laid paper. Serial No. 1698. Signed by J. Heath and J. Jeffries. 95mm by 116mm. Two-Sided. The Ford Cataloger wrote of the somewhat involved design exchanges with this issue: “Re-engraved ‘1742’ date from prior issue at the bottom. Some similarities to the January 15, 1741/42 Boyd-Ford Two Pence note, but not the identical plate re-engraved to 1742 from that type to this.” Evenly centered on both sides, the face with particularly deep black ink and bold motifs, and with only a trifling fade at the left side. The front features a bold impression from an early state of the printing plate. An old paper strip has been removed from the back right edge but to no great visual distraction; the same can be said regarding the other repairs. Indeed, the note probably appears as wholesome now as it ever has, short of its pre-circulation days. Rarity, quality, and desirability are just a few of this note’s calling cards. We suspect it will be kept in good company by the successful bidder on this lot.
