Province of ye Massachusetts Bay. June 20, 1744. Three Pence, New Tenor (One Shilling, Old Tenor). PCGS Choice Very Fine-35 Details. Multiple Repairs, Writing in Pencil. As illustrated.

Description: Laid paper. Serial No.20320. Signed by J. Heath and S. Welles. 98mm by 120mm. Two-Sided. The plates for this issue were re-engraved from plates for the 1741/42 and 1742 Redated issues. Choice to the eye, with readily forgivable enhancements that serve the preservation of the note for future collectors in a positive manner. Front nicely centered, back impression somewhat askew to the left, cost code “eyxy” penciled twice. The lack of small change in the colonies led to small-change notes of this sort. These notes oiled the working-class economy and changed hands so often that most of today’s surviving examples are little better than rags. The present note may well be the finest known of the denomination. An important pre-1750 issue in any denomination – take your pick, each is essentially as rare as any of the others. Here is a classic rarity, apparently in the top echelon of known specimens. This attractive note would be an instant upgrade for some few collectors, or the primary representative of the variety in an advanced cabinet.
