Description: Laid paper. No Serial number. Unsigned. 82mm by 75mm. Uniface, back plate printing. A fairly crisp note with solid eye appeal, and with qualifiers that are easily overlooked. A strip of paper backing has been removed since its appearance in the Ford sale. The design elements feature well-hidden lettering as well as backward wording. Two rows of numerals, the upper reading 1 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 9, and the lower row reading 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9, are integrated into the design. Wayte Raymond’s code “csx” penciled in lower right corner. The Ford cataloger called this note “An enigma of an item, not mentioned by Newman. Deceptive enough in the period to look like emergency money if it leaked out. However, likely an essay or Proof by the typesetters before the final version before the usage (hence the ‘1 2…’ – these might be plate versions).” A rare and unusual note with an outstanding pedigree, and a piece deserving of a place in an advanced colonial note cabinet or a Massachusetts Bay specialized collection.
