Description: Laid paper. Serial No. 1853. Signed by John Clark, E. Hutchinson, and Samuel Sewall. 100mm by 150mm. Scrolled vine and leaves motif at back top. Eric Newman thought this note was a Contemporary Counterfeit, about which the Ford cataloger noted this was “a ‘tall’ note, printed from a well-engraved copper plate – perhaps too well – which may condemn this counterfeit.” Formerly in a paper frame with penciled notations regarding the Bushnell collection; its removal does nothing to detract from the quality, appearance, or rarity of the note. The inking is bold, with strong red background AR monogram, equally strong signatures and serial number. The historic importance and absolute rarity of this note cannot be overstressed. It represents an opportunity, however infrequently offered, to obtain one of the earliest examples of dated paper money in what would become the United States. Any note from this issue is a rarity, and this attractive specimen will set the bidding floor on notice when it enters the auction fray.
