Province of the Massachusetts Bay in New England. May 31, 1710. Fifty Shillings. Fr. MA-44. PCGS Choice Very Fine-35. Small edge split. As illustrated.

Description: Laid paper, watermark at lower left of, according to Newman, an English manufacturer. Serial No. 2927. Signed by Sam. Checkley, Samuel Sewall, and John Parker. 110mm by 145mm. Scrolled vine and leaves at back top. Newman thought this note was a Contemporary Counterfeit, but the Ford cataloger makes a good case for its genuine nature: “The crown watermark paper is also a criteria that leans this note to the genuine, and not contemporary counterfeit status…even if judged a contemporary counterfeit, it is a five-figure note due to series, grade, and pedigree.” Call it what you will, the historic nature and incredible rarity of the note should provide ample impetus for specialists to formulate a winning bidding strategy.
