Province of the Massachusetts-Bay. 1737. One Penny. Fr. MA-82. PCGS Choice Very Fine-35 Details. Small Edge Repairs, Minor Pencil. As illustrated.

Description: Laid paper. No Serial number. Signed by Wm. Dudley in pale red ink. 79mm by 68mm. “This Bill of One Penny Equal To Three Pence of the Old Tenor” on back. An attractive piece with eye appeal that goes well beyond the given grade. Small penciled “mayxy” cost code on back. The entire 1737 series of small-change notes, six denominations in all, is among the rarest of all the early American paper money issues. In fact, prior to the Ford sales, Stack’s had not handled a single note of the issue! In the ensuing 19 years since this note’s first appearance, very few notes of any of the denominations have entered the marketplace; no doubt any that did make their way into the hobby probably have a Ford pedigree. In a sale laden with rare treasures, this little One Penny note stands tall and proud. Rare is rare, as they say. That little homily plays well for both the note and the opportunity in this instance, so bid accordingly.

Pedigree: Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate; Stack’s sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part III, May,2004, Lot 514. (Ford Price Realized: $7,187.50)
